Need to know how natural gas is used and what it can do

The three main uses of natural gas are power, heating (residential and commercial facilities), and supporting industrial and manufacturing processes.

Electricity is produced in a power plant Conroe Electricity Rates that burns gas. When we heat our home or business, a network of gas pipes transports gas to our home, which is then fired indoors to heat water and provide heating.

In manufacturing, gas is used to make fertilizers, plastics, medicine, and other things. Many industrial processes, such as making bricks, glass, steel, and many other products, require heat. Natural gas is a chemical feedstock – a feedstock used in machining and processing – in the production of plastics. Natural gas is also used to make many chemicals, from propane to ammonia. Industrial plants also use natural gas for heating.

Four natural gas

The four main gases that make up

Methane:

Methane (CH4) is a hydrocarbon that is the main source of gas. Methane is also a greenhouse gas (GHG), so its presence in the atmosphere affects global temperatures and climate patterns. Methane comes from a variety of anthropogenic (human impact) and natural sources. Sources of anthropogenic emissions include waste disposal, oil and gas systems, agriculture, coal mining, firefighting and telecommunications, wastewater treatment, and some industrial processes.

Methane is the second largest anthropogenic GHG after carbon dioxide (CO2), accounting for approximately 20% of global atmospheric emissions. Methane is 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide at trapping heat in the atmosphere. Over the past two centuries, the concentration of methane in the atmosphere has more than doubled, due to human activity. Since methane is a hot and short-lived greenhouse gas compared to carbon dioxide, achieving significant reductions will have a rapid and significant impact on atmospheric warming potential.

Ethane

  • Ethane is a chemical compound of simple hydrocarbon with 2 carbons and 6 hydrogens.
  • Ethane is a gas at room temperature. It is produced from gas and methane wells and is often released from natural gas that is sent to markets.

The separated ethane is the feedstock for steam distillation for the production of ethylene and its derivatives. At the refinery, ethane is produced as part of the clean-up gas produced by many processing plants and is often left in the flue gas as fuel.

Butane

Butane or n-butane is an alkane chemical compound with the formula C4H10. Butane is a gas at room temperature in the atmosphere. Butane is a highly flammable, colorless, and volatile gas that evaporates at room temperature. Butane is part of the LPG group. Other compounds include propane, propylene, butadiene, butylene, isobutylene, and their mixtures. Butane burns more than gasoline and coal.

Propane

Propane is a three-carbon alkane and has the chemical formula C3H8. It is a gas at normal temperature and pressure but can be absorbed into a portable liquid. As a product of gas processing and oil refining, it is widely used as fuel in household and industrial applications and chronic public transport. Propane gas has become a popular fuel for barbecues and portable stoves because its low boiling point of −42°C allows it to vaporize in pressurized containers. (2-phase). Propane fuels cars, forklifts, taxis, outboard motors, and advanced ice machines and is used for heating and cooking in recreational vehicles and motor homes. The price of individual gas in natural gas varies for each gas asset.
